A few years ago, I decided to radically change the way my family eats. In search of a healthier body, kinder karma and a better planet, my children and I transitioned to a strictly vegetarian diet. Despite whispers from family and friends that we’d lost our minds and despite my own self-doubt that I could permanently forego the grilled chicken from my favorite pasta dishes, we began in earnest and I could not be happier with the results. We look and feel healthier, sleep better at night and feel positive about the difference we’re making in slowing global warming.
If you just did a double-take at that last sentence, then I encourage you to read more about the serious environmental concerns associated with raising livestock. No matter what your religious or spiritual beliefs, no matter how much of an “animal lover” you are (or are not), we can almost universally agree that the planet’s not in the best shape and that we have an obligation to help improve and preserve the earth for future generations. Reducing your meat consumption is one incredibly easy way to do that. I’m not even talking about going “meat-less”…how about just “meat-lighter”?
Ever since Bella Luccè was certified Carbon Balanced by TerraPass, I have been reading their blog and enjoying my daily dose of environmental awareness. I checked in this morning to discover a fantastic presentation by Mark Bittman, detailing the history of food in this country and the impact our eating habits are having at present. I encourage you to grab a few minutes today and stop by to hear his monologue. I guarantee you’ll never look at food quite the same way again!
