Celebrate Earth Day
April 22, 2009
Today is Earth Day, a celebration of all things natural and a time dedicated to understanding our environmental impact. This is one my favorite days of the year…I encourage you to do something special today to honor Mother Earth. Here are a few suggestions.
1. Send a free Earth Day E-Card via the Nature Conservancy to help raise awareness.
2. Join a local event in your community. There are literally hundreds of festivals, marches and celebrations going on right now! Type in your zip code and away you go…
3. Learn how you can conserve resources at home, at work and on the road. These easy-to-follow tips can save you time and money as you help reduce your environmental impact.
4. Toss out those toxic household cleaners. Save money and the planet by creating simple, natural homemade cleaners using everyday ingredients.
5. Contact your congresspeople & senators- urge them to take a proactive stance on environmental issues.
6. Make a donation to the Environmental Defense Fund to preserve our oceans, protect endangered species and fight for cleaner air. EarthShare is also a fantastic organization working on a variety of environmental causes.
7. Take a quiz to determine your personal ecological footprint. Prepare to be shocked…
8. Buy something organic today! This is a good place to begin your journey towards understanding the impact organic foods can have on the planet. Ready for the next step? This directory will help you locate organic goods and this article will show you how to buy organic on a budget.
9. Teach your children the importance of environmental awareness. Younger children can play games, read stories and create printable activities at the EPA website, while older kids will enjoy an action packed game of Hog Busters. My kids love storytime and this reading list by Progressive Kid (one of my favorite websites!) is a fantastic place to start a collection of enviro-friendly books kids love. My children also enjoy Michael Recycle, The Organic Adventures of Tucker the Tomato and It’s Earth Day with the Little Critters.
10. Discover businesses that are taking strides to put the environment first- then support them. On this day, Bella Luccè is especially proud to be a member of both the Organic Trade Association and the Green Products Alliance.
11. Consider what you put in your mouth and strive to be an ethical eater. Our society is just beginning to make the connection between meat consumption and enviornmental disaster, but the evidence can’t be ignored. Consider this New York Times article about our rapid increase in meat consumption and the ripple effect it’s having worldwide. Or this fantastic article by the Toronto Vegetarian Association that explains the environmental ramifications of meat consumption. A 2006 report by the United Nations highlighted the fact that raising livestock for food consumption actually generates more greenhouse gas emissions than all the transportation in the world, not to mention the soil and water degradation it’s responsible for. Scary stuff, eh? If you’re not ready to go vegetarian, try to reduce your meat consumption…skipping the steak and chicken is easier than you think. Here’s an entire month of meatless meal recipes to make trying out a vegetarian lifestyle a cinch. My kids and I took the vegetarian plunge a few years ago and it’s been a fasntastic experience. It was easier to change their diet than I ever imagined!
It is my hope that we all take small steps to make every day Earth Day. In a neat little coincidence, today also marks the 4th birthday of The Buzz. Happy Birthday Buzz!
