    Amity Boots by Frye

As the slightest hint of a chill hits the air here in South Carolina, I find myself thinking of autumn and warm boots…specifically THESE boots from Frye via Anthropologie. They will set you back quite a significant chunck of change, but Frye boots are a special kind of tough and should last damn near forever. I am still trying to reconcile why I cannot eat a steak but I can rock a fine pair of leather boots. My conscience is conflicted, but a girl can dream, no?

    • I need a few more months of summer, beach and sand!

    Ingredient of the Month
    Pomegranate Seed Oil

Brimming with potent antioxidants that wage war on the free radicals responsible for aging, pomegranate seed oil is also rich in ellagic and punicic acids, which are reknowned for their ability to increase skin elasticity as they moisturize and protect dry skin. It takes 200+ pounds of fresh pomegranates to yield one pound of costly pomegranate seed oil.

    Home Spa Ritual
    5 Penny Lip Scrub

Dry, chapped lips are an unfortunate reality of winter. Thankfully, outrageously priced lip scrubs don’t have to be. You can recreate a simple version of those department store concoctions at home- for a fraction of the price. For less than a nickel per application, you can use this handy little tip to help loosen and gently remove dead skin for a Pitt-worthy pucker.

Take a pinch of brown sugar and gently rub onto moistened lips (don’t attempt this dry or you’ll risk raw, overly exfoliated lips). Rinse with warm water and immediately apply chapstick. I do this routine several times per week throughout autumn and winter and it yields beautiful results in seconds!

    Drumroll, please...

    This kid is so neat…

    January 24, 2007

Completely off topic and a tad more personal than is the norm for me, but I have to tell you how proud I am of this kid.

That’s Chloe, my 9 year old daughter (and her pal Ash) . For being so young, she’s strikingly opinionated and aware of the world, and she has the biggest heart of anyone I know. This is the kid that came to me wanting to become a vegetarian (and successfully made the transition, without looking back, almost 4 months ago). This is the kid who donates part of her allowance to charity. And she’s the kid who’s convinced me to head to Washington DC to rally for peace this weekend.

So Chloe, Celie (my 6 year old) and I will make our way to DC tomorrow…to see our government in action and to take part in the United For Peace & Justice March On Washington. I think it’s glaringly obvious that this world, and our country specifically, are in dire need of a greater appreciation and understanding between cultures. World affairs are discussed frequently and fairly openly in my house and Chloe is so interested in what’s going on in the world. When she saw a flyer for this rally taped to a utility pole in downtown Columbia last Saturday, she said she was going to start saving her allowance so that she could make it to a rally like that when she gets older. My heart broke in that moment, and I had a trip booked within hours.

I am so very grateful that my friend Robin and her son will be meeting us there. We’ll spend the next few days touring the Bureau of Printing & Engraving, the National Museum of Natural History and all the monuments as well. Robin was even able to arrange a meeting for the girls with Lindsay Graham, the senator from South Carolina, and Chloe has a laundry list of issues she plans on bending his ear with. Ha…should be interesting. If you’re anywhere near Washington, the march could always use a few more warm bodies. Visit their website to learn more.

I’ll post pictures and details once we return. Isn’t it amazing when our kids inspire us?
