Make it an Indie Holiday
November 17, 2006
Those of you who know me personally are well aware of my usual holiday scramble. I start my shopping sometime between December 17th-20th and it’s a full-on marathon right up until Christmas Eve. I don’t mean to do it that late, but it seems that there are never enough hours in the day between my family obligations and work (sound familiar to anyone?). So it is with a sizable amount of panic and mayhem that I embark on my shopping journey. I fight the crowds at the mall, I pay through the nose as I have missed a good many sales by that late date and I rarely find that perfect “something” that I am beaming with pride to give. This year, I am proud to say that I have done things a bit differently…
I have actually planned ahead. Revolutionary concept, no? I finally got it through my head that Christmas comes on December 25th EVERY YEAR, without fail. And I realized that I would enjoy the season that much more if it wasn’t spent in an absolute frenzy. So are you ready for my big announcement? Please, sit down and prepare yourselves: I am finished shopping. All Done. And it’s not even Thanksgiving. Pick yourself up off the floor Mom…aren’t you proud?
This year, I have a closet full of gifts that I positively cannot wait to give. I shopped wisely, carefully selecting unique items that I am positive will arouse grateful smiles as they are opened. The best part? Big box stores didn’t see a dime of my money this year. Well, okay, I did get one electronic gadget for my kiddos at Amazon, but- that not withstanding- I made it a totally Indie Christmas. You see, there are literally thousands of enterprising women out there who make the most amazing things. They train and apprentice, craft and create, and spend their days pining away at their own microbusinesses, making things they are passionate about. And this year, I decided it was they who deserved my hard-earned dollars. Target and Wal-Mart get enough of our money all year long and I wanted to support those women this season.
So, without further ado, I present to you a gold-plated, formally embossed invitation to explore some of the finest girl-powered microbusinesses on the web. By spending your dollars with them this season, you’ll help Mommies stay home with their babies, college students get through another semester and savvy women follow their dreams. And that is a gift in and of itself.
